After four decades, the daughter of Sway’s longest-serving District Nurse has returned to the bungalow that went with mother’s job – to celebrate her fortieth wedding anniversary!
Muriel Lipscombe served the village of Sway for thirty years and, in 1962, her daughter Pat married Richard White. Although the couple continued to live in the village, less than half a mile away, Pat had never returned to her former home until recently. Accompanied by Richard and the rest of the family, Pat selected The Nurse’s Cottage as the venue for their anniversary lunch.
They were welcomed by Tony Barnfield, who began his restaurant and guest accommodation business at the Station Road premises in 1992: “It was a privilege to help make the anniversary special for the White family, although I was surprised to discover that part of what is now the restaurant was once Nurse Lipscombe’s bedroom!”
And her daughter was certainly intrigued to see how much had changed in the Cottage, where a conservatory extension to the restaurant was nearing completion.
