STEVE AND TONY TAKE STOCK!

July 1999

Two New Forest chefs who met last month as Finalists in the Hampshire Fare Chef of the Year Competition have discarded any friendly rivalry, with winner Steve Hurst of Brockenhurst’s New Park Manor Hotel inviting Tony Barnfield from The Nurse’s Cottage Restaurant and Guest Accommodation in Sway to visit his kitchen to pick up a few tips!

At the age of 50, Tony is living proof that you can (after all) teach old dogs new tricks: after over 20 years as a radio presenter, he first cooked professionally when The Nurse’s Cottage opened for business in 1992. Steve (27) is a career chef: hailing originally from Lyndhurst, he worked at the Montagu Arms Hotel in Beaulieu prior to his appointment as New Park Manor’s Head Chef in August 1997.

Both chefs included New Forest venison from Ipley Manor on the menus that won them a place in the Final, as well as several other ingredients from Hampshire, and they are unaminous that good quality local fare cannot be bettered.
