ANOTHER AWARD ON THE MENU?

October 2009

Just months after being named Breakfast Champion for Southern England, a New Forest restaurant is one of three Finalists for a Flavour of the South East award.
Unique in the Tourism ExSEllence Awards, this is the third year running that Tourism South East judges have shortlisted The Nurse’s Cottage Restaurant with Rooms in Sway for an award. The five-bedroom, seven-table restaurant went on to win the 2007 Outstanding Customer Service award and last year was presented with the Access for All award.
“This year’s award nomination is really pleasing,” says Chef/Proprietor Tony Barnfield, “because we have worked hard for more than a decade to bring local and/or organic produce to the table. We make our own bread and rolls, using local flour, the marmalade and preserves are made in Lymington, poultry, eggs and meat from the west of the Forest, and we even offer wine from Sway in the evenings. We limit food (and wine) miles wherever we can – and guests certainly appreciate good quality local produce.”
Anthony Climpson OBE, who runs New Forest District Council’s Tourism Service, knows Tony well: “He is a long-standing champion of the destination, quality standards and locally-produced food. We need more restaurateurs like Tony to promote New Forest Marque® produce to both holidaying visitors and local people.”
Hampshire Fare’s Tim Brock adds: “The Nurse’s Cottage is a great ambassador for Hampshire Fare and Tony Barnfield is very proactive in local sourcing and promoting local produce, both year round and for special events such as the Hampshire Food Festival".
