A local restaurant owner from Sway, near Lymington, can toast his success today having been declared a ‘Breakfast Champion’ for the region, for the second time! Tony Barnfield, who runs The Nurse’s Cottage, won the award for his commitment to sourcing and serving a truly local and healthy breakfast.
The competition was held as part of the celebrations for Farmhouse Breakfast Week (25–31 January), organised by HGCA (formerly Home Grown Cereals Authority). The campaign highlights the quality and diversity of breakfast produce available from around the country and reminds us all why breakfast is the most important meal of the day!
Judge and HGCA representative, Julian Gibbons, commented that Tony’s breakfast was not only delicious but that it was “an excellent example of why we should all think about buying more regional breakfast foods. Whether you are buying from a local butcher, baker or farm shop there is a great choice of everything for breakfast, from cereals to breads and sausages”. Julian was particularly impressed with the Tony’s commitment to serving as much local produce as possible.
Tony’s bread is baked on the premises using flour from a local mill, the sausages sourced from the village butcher, and are made from local pork and the eggs come from a nearby farm.
Tony is delighted to have won, as he explained: “I am a big believer in starting the day with a healthy breakfast and pride myself on selecting the very best produce available. I take great pleasure and pride in the breakfast we serve and seeing how much our guests enjoy sitting down to a tasty, breakfast that boosts their energy levels and really sets them up for the day”.
The competition was supported by Aga. During Farmhouse Breakfast there will be breakfast cookery demonstrations at many Aga stores around the country. For more information on Farmhouse Breakfast or to find out what is happening in your area visit www.farmhousebreakfast.com
