For the second year running, the Wine List at The Nurse’s Cottage Restaurant with Rooms in Sway has been selected by the judging panel as a Finalist in the Condé Nast Johansens Champagne Taittinger Wine List of the Year Award. The tiny restaurant, which has only six tables, is in competition with five other much larger hotels and inns from the UK and Ireland. The judges commented favourably on the List’s “contemporary style and layout with lots of interesting information as well as range of wines”.
The Nurse’s Cottage has also been chosen as one of three Finalists for The Skills South East Award for Training and Development. One of the New Forest Brilliance in Business Awards organised by the New Forest Business Partnership, the Cottage won the latter’s Outstanding Customer Service Award last year.
The five-bedroom business, which has received numerous awards and accolades since opening in 1992, is run by Tony Barnfield, formerly a freelance BBC Radio presenter. “People often ask what I did before this, expecting me to say I worked in hotels and restaurants,” says Tony. “Even the Michelin Inspector this year imagined I came from a food background, so I corrected him by saying I had a customer background, staying and eating in hundreds of different places during my radio career. I believe it’s that experience which helps put us at the forefront of so many industry awards.”
