Couples clutching the green and white piece of paper that some decades earlier was issued to certify their exchanges of vows have recently become a familiar sight descending on a New Forest restaurant. For the second year running, guests eating at The Nurse’s Cottage Restaurant with Rooms in Sway have been lured to the tiny establishment by an unusual discount scheme – Wedded Bliss.
“Diners bringing their marriage certificates receive a percentage off their meals equivalent to the number of years since they were wed,” says Chef/Proprietor Tony Barnfield. “The original idea was to run the offer for the first ‘lucky’ 13 days of February prior to St Valentine’s Day but demand is such that both last year and this we’ve operated the scheme from mid-January. We fully expected to offer discounts of 50% or thereabouts but a significant number of customers have been together far longer. To date, the long-service medal, as it were, goes to a couple married in September 1945 earning them 62% off!”
The restaurant is renowned for its customer service and a remarkably comprehensive wine list, ably complementing the bill of fare, much of which is sourced locally and, where possible, organic in origin.
