Having won prizes and awards in almost every conceivable category, a small restaurant with rooms in the New Forest has achieved national fame for its wine list.
The Nurse’s Cottage in Sway has been named Wine List of the Year 2006 in English Country Houses, Small Hotels and Inns by Condé Nast Johansens and Champagne Taittinger.
Twice in the last five years, the four-bedroom property has been runner-up in the same organisation’s Most Excellent Service Award. Other recent awards have included Best Breakfast in the South, RAC Little Gem, AA Red Diamonds, VisitBritain Gold Award, Hampshire Edge Employer of the Year 2005 and was Highly Commended (coming second to the international Compass Group) in the Springboard UK Young People Award for Excellence.
Back on the wine front, chef/proprietor Tony Barnfield has won through to the South West Regional Final of the UK Sommelier of the Year 2006 competition, which includes a written paper, blind tasting and practical service tasks.
