BRIAN SEAMAN, TOURISM FOR ALL
We are proud of our reputation for “the remarkable level of provision for the less able visitor” (Condé Nast Johansens). We received the Judges Award for Excellence in Continuing Commitment to the Interests of Disabled People in the 2004 Southampton Centre for Independent Living Awards.
Judging the Access for All Tourism ExSEllence Awards 2008, Brian Seaman was “particularly taken with the provision of access for older and disabled people, not only in terms of facilities for ambulant wheelchair users but also for those with a visual impairment or hearing loss”. He described some of the facilities such as bedroom hearing loops, Big Button telephones and shake awake alarm clocks as “really unusual and ground breaking”.
The Cottage was for many years home to Sway’s successive District Nurses, after whom the bedrooms are named (some dates are approximate):
1913-18 Liddell (pronounced Liddle) is a Single with shower (4ft. 6ins. double bed),
1918-27 Lloyd is the Superior Twin/Kingsize Double with bath and shower (6ft. double or 2 × 3ft. single beds),
1927-37 Southerden is also a flexible room with bath and can be configured as Twin or Kingsize Double (6ft. double or 2 × 3ft. single beds),
1937-67 Lipscombe is our Classic Single with bath (3ft. single bed),
and 1967-83 Gibson, the Cottage’s original master bedroom, is our Classic Double (4ft. 6ins. double bed).
