INTRODUCTION

  • Established in April 1992, The Nurse’s Cottage Restaurant with Rooms is one of the New Forest’s most highly acclaimed places to wine, dine and relax, enjoying an enviable reputation for comfort, good food and warm hospitality.
  • We are centrally situated in the village of Sway close to shops and other facilities including Surgery and Pharmacy.
  • For those with mobility, hearing and visual impairments, we are proud of our record in providing such facilities as are practicable and The Nurse’s Cottage Restaurant with Rooms has been awarded level 1 under the National Accessible Scheme in all three categories.
  • Pets can be accommodated by arrangement, but only assistance dogs are allowed in the Restaurant.
  • The Nurse’s Cottage meets the requirements of the fire authorities and is protected by a modern fire alarm system in all sectors of the building.
  • It is against the law to smoke on the premises.

PRE-ARRIVAL

  • We welcome enquiries and reservations in person or by telephone or email (fax can be made available by arrangement).
  • Large print versions of most of our information can be made available upon request.

ARRIVAL AND CAR PARKING FACILITIES

  • Parking is open plan on gravel with concrete pavement surround. There are no designated parking spaces for less able guests but they may easily be dropped off onto the paved route to Reception and Restaurant, as well as to guest bedrooms.
  • If arriving by train at nearby Sway Station, a ramp is available for disembarkation (by prior arrangement with South West Trains). A direct train to Sway (minimum hourly service throughout the day) is recommended for guests with any form of mobility impairment, as the faster train service requires changing platforms at Brockenhurst, where there are two long flights of stairs to negotiate. However, there is easy wheelchair access from Sway Station and the Cango bus service offers low floor and wheelchair access. We can usually arrange to meet guests arriving by public transport and information about local public transport services is freely available.

MAIN ENTRANCE AND RECEPTION

  • Reception is normally open from 8.30am (Sundays, 9am) to 11am and from 3pm until the end of Dinner, but is often manned all day.
  • To reach Reception, Restaurant and our Lloyd bedroom, there is a choice of three steps or a well-designed ramp, each with handrails on both sides.
  • Luggage should not be brought to Reception, as porterage will be provided.
  • Less able guests staying in other bedrooms (Southerden, Lipscombe, Gibson and Liddell) are recommended to wait in the car park upon arrival if accompanied by an able-bodied companion.
  • These bedrooms are accessed by a separate, private entrance to the original Cottage building at ground floor level. There is one step up from the porch, but a temporary ramp is available if sufficient advance notice is given.
  • From these four bedrooms, guests will encounter three steps up to the main restaurant area but meals can be served in a small area at the same level if advance notice is given.
  • Generally, there are no restrictions on access but we ask guests to consider fellow guests and our neighbours.

BEDROOMS AND ENSUITE BATHROOMS

  • Owing to the size of the building, no bedroom accommodation is suitable for an independent wheelchair user.
  • A number of appliances to assist less able guests are available upon request from Reception, including:
Door Beacon signaller for those unable to hear a knock at the door
Dycem Grip-it bottle or jar opener
    Plastic tap turners
    Shake Awake vibrating alarm clock
Sony Universal Remote Control for television/teletext, video/dvd (with large print numbers and buttons)
    Toilet seat raisers.
  • All bedrooms have a Big Button Plus telephone. A Uniphone 1150 text telephone is available from Reception for guests’ use.
  • A hearing loop is installed in all bedrooms and a microphone can be supplied for use with this system.
  • The pillows provided in each bedroom contain Quallofil extra life fibre, covered in poly/cotton. We have a small stock of pillows with 85% white duck feather, 15% white duck down filling, with a piped cotton sateen cover. These are available upon request.
  • Grab rails, non-slip flooring and non-slip bath and/or shower mats are provided in all bathrooms.
  • Baths with showers above the taps are provided in Southerden, Lipscombe and Gibson bedrooms. Liddell has a shower cubicle with a small threshold. Lloyd has a similar shower cubicle as well as a bath. Both shower cubicles are equipped with a seat.
  • The Guest Information folder in each bedroom contains individual fire evacuation routes.
  • A ground floor plan of The Nurse’s Cottage Restaurant with Rooms is available at Reception.

GARDEN

  • Guests are welcome to use the garden at most times, but access is via three steep steps down from the Restaurant.
  • Our Lloyd bedroom overlooks the garden, with a small balcony and four steps down to the garden itself.

RESTAURANT

  • The Restaurant is fully accessible by wheelchair via a well-designed ramp with handrails on both sides, as is the alternative route using three steps.
  • The unisex/disabled toilet is also accessible by wheelchair and an emergency pull cord is provided.
  • Large print versions of our Breakfast and seasonal Dinner menus can be prepared upon request.
  • Daily specials will be announced to guests when seated.
  • We aim to accommodate vegetarian and other dietary requirements, as well as catering for individual allergies where possible. Advance notice of such requirements is requested.
  • All menu items are prepared to order and most can be cooked more plainly.
